I try not to wear denim to church, because usually it’s too casual. But, I made a dark denim skirt yesterday and really wanted to wear it today, so I dressed it up.

Ruffled fancy t-shirt: Kohls… If I recall correctly
Cardigan: Handmedown
Tank: JCPenny’s
Skirt: Made by me
Boots: Shoe Carnival
Scarf/headcovering: Handmedown (I moved it from a headscarf/bandthing to a ponytail bow after the worship service)
Earrings: Payless
Bracelet: Gift

What dressed the denim up? Well, first of all, it helped that the skirt is pretty simple, has a fitted, slimming waistband, and is floor-length and dark colored. The ruffled neckline gives a fancy edge. The black jacket gives warmth and another layer of “I thought about my outfit this morning”, and the bracelet and earrings match the skirt buttons and give some glamor. πŸ˜€ My boots were 3″ heels, so that helped with my posture. πŸ˜€

I had so much fun making this skirt! I’ve never done buttonholes or a fly before, and both actually turned out! πŸ˜€

How do y’all feel about denim at church? Do you try to dress it up? Do you just not wear it? Do you think it’s okay?

  1. Beautiful outfit, Olivia.
To be honest, I never worry about wearing denim to church, I believe that as long as a young lady wears something modest and glorifying to God, then it doesn't matter what you wear.
    (OK, well maybe not pyjama's!)

  2. I love your style, and how you always make the cutest outfits from modest pieces of clothing! The skirt you made is beautiful too! πŸ™‚

I generally don't like to wear denim to church either, but I really like how you made it more dressy, and you're right! It being a DARK denim looks more…classy. πŸ™‚ Keep up the good work!

Oh, and I was wondering, do you only wear skirts and dresses? Or do you wear pants sometimes? πŸ™‚
    Blessings to you!

    1. Thanks for your comment, Madeline!
To answer your question, I prefer wearing skirts because I feel that it's easier to be modest *and* pretty in them. But, I wear pants usually at least one day a week for practical reasons, even though I fully believe a girl can do nearly everything in a skirt. πŸ˜€ So, yes, I wear pants sometimes. πŸ™‚ How about you?

    2. Thanks for the comment back, Olivia! πŸ™‚
I like skirts and dresses a lot because I always feel more feminine in them, although most of the timeI do wear jeans (at least in the winter) because I feel like they're warmer and I can curl up on a couch easier. πŸ˜‰ But I do like to try and wear a pretty top with jeans (I hate wearing t-shirts with jeans. It feels so dumpy and UNfeminine). Also, another problem I have, I think, is that I don't really have a lot of skirts that I like. I've been looking for more skirts though, so hopefully I can find some. I think it's great that you make your own clothes! I tried sewing a few years ago and I never really got into it. πŸ™

    3. Do you have the pattern for this skirt? Or ALL your skirts for that matter? They are so pretty and not frumpy.

  3. This outfit was lovely! To a cowgirl, denim is essential, it seems. So, I have several denim things in my closet. πŸ™‚
Did you have a certain pattern you used for the denim skirt? I really liked it, so I thought I might make one. πŸ™‚ Longer skirts are definitely on the 'thumbs up' list for me! And dressing it up with a cute shirt, sweater, etc, is always fun. It gives you a comfortable, casual look without being TOO casual. πŸ™‚
And, like Jemimah said, I think that the Lord cares more about how your heart looks, than whether or not you are wearing denim to church. πŸ™‚

  4. Very cute and classy!! I love dressing up jeans for visiting family or other dressier events! Our church is pretty casual so I am pretty comfortable wearing denim or jeans to church. Besides the pastor's wife, mom and the older ladies. I am the only girl that wears skirts or dresses to church. Most of the other girls wear jeans and hoodies or t-shirts to church. I have long denim skirt that I sometimes wear and usually I go for a feminine country girl look with that. Sometimes I wear jeans to church and I try to dress them up with my hair done nice and a cute top!
    Love, Katie

  5. Love your outfit!
I think it's okay to wear jeans to church I do it every two or three weeks, and in the witer I don't have very many warm skits to wear.

  6. I really love this outfit. I would wear this to church, as my church is fairly casual. Alot of people wear jeans. I really don't feel feminine in jeans, but I would wear a modestly cut denim skirt like this one. I just started following your blog and it's really great.

  7. Hey Olivia!
I've been "following" your blog for quite a while. Almost everyday, I'm checking to see if you've posted anything. πŸ™‚
You're such an encouragement to me. I don't see that many girls wanting to please God by dressing modestly these days.
I'm an all skirts girl myself and it's really exciting to see how modest and cute you are at the same time.
In regards to the denim, I love it! I think dark denim makes any outfit look a little dressier and classy.
My wardrobe is mostly comprised of boots and denim skirts! πŸ™‚
Thanks for being such an encouragement!

    P.S. I think we live around the same area . . .

  8. I just found your blog through Bramblewood Fashion and have totally fallen in love with your site! Thank you so much for all of the ideas! I love your outfit — I like to "dress up" more for church so only wear dark denim occasionally out of respect on Sundays. πŸ™‚

blessings as you continue to live as a light for the Lord! Looking forward to learning more from your site!

  9. Very impressed with your sewing skills. Love the outfit!

You asked about denim…I dont mean to sound disrespectful, but The Lord doesnt care what I wear to church as long as I'm representing him as a modest, Christian woman.(which applies to my whole life) I dont act differently or wear different things on Sunday vs. the rest of the week. Its all about my heart and Him.

  10. Wow! I love the outfit, and you did such a wonderful job with the skirt! By the way, I appreciate your respect towards Sunday's church service. God surely does not judge us based on what we wear, but it can show a great reverence and respect for the day when we wear our "best". Blessings to you!

  11. love the combination of green, black and denim. you are such an encouragement! πŸ™‚
the skirt looks so nice. you did an excellent job on it.
You have now given me to bug to sew some clothes. πŸ™‚

  12. I love the skirt! you did a great job on it! My sister and I love to sew clothes, so I love to look at your blog to get ideas. YOu asked about denim so here it goes:) I don't think it says anywhere in the Bible that you can't wear denim. But let me tell you something a wise older brother told me. " You should always wear your best for God. Since it is the Lord's house" of course I paraphrased just a little he said that to me because only sometimes would I wear make up to church. When I didn't feel like putting on I just didn't:) Personally I don't wear denim but I have friends who do! You did a great job dressing it up though!:}

  13. Found you through a blog hop from Frugally Sustainable to Deep Roots At Home to here! I absolutely LOVE this skirt!! Have you considered selling your pattern or offering your services? I would definitely pay to have you make this skirt in my size!

  14. Thank you for this post, Olivia. I really like that you think carefully about the way you dress and it's fully a part of how you honour God. In our church, the culture is completely free on how people dress – so we have guys coming in jackets and ties and others in shorts and flip-flops. No one bats an eyelid and I like that everyone is accepted regardless of how they dress. But modesty for me is a non-negotiable and I'll continue to bring that up in my conversations with women who don't seem to have registered that a too-low or tight outfit is such a problem to the men around them. Big hug from England πŸ™‚

  15. How did you make that skirt!!!im pretty new with the needle so do you think i could do it? also how did you measure? I adore long skirts but its so hard to find some that look as good as yours!
    Great Job!

  16. I love the skirt! Do you know of any places that sell decently priced denim skirts?! I keep finding them in the $100 range and I wouldn't like to spend that much! If you know of any, but I thought it was worth asking!
