Hey y’all! I hope you had a great weekend! We’ve had grandparents visiting so it’s been a little more relaxed around here as we spend time with them. 🙂
Sharing this outfit today that I wore out to do errands last week. I wanted the simplicity of a dress but needed warmth, a little more coverage, and to make it a little less formal, so pairing it with this Columbia fleece vest was perfect.

I got this dress from ThredUP and it fits perfectly… a little too perfect, actually, because it’s very form-fitting. But, that’s the purpose of layers and I felt comfortable and put-together in this outfit. 🙂

// outfit details //
Vest: Columbia brand: ThredUP credit
Boots: Hush Puppies brand: $180
(so excited to be wearing these a second season!)
Earrings: Thrift store

As I was out, I stopped and checked my P.O. box– inside was this gorgeous lip color from Jennifer Reed, Beauty Counter consultant. I’ve worn it every day for a week and really, really love the consistency, coverage, and lack of nasty ingredients! I’ll be doing a review of the AM moisturizing cream soon.

Real quick, if you’ve not liked “Fresh Modesty”on Facebook yet, you really should go do that. For the next 7 days I’ll be sharing Etsy shops from Fresh Modesty readers and hopefully help you cross things off your Christmas list!

How have you dressed down a fancy dress lately?

  1. I have a full-skirted heavy knit v necked cap sleeved dress, too warm for summer, too bare on top for winter, so I borrowed an idea from you and found a light cotton spencer (New Zealand term; basically a long sleeved singlet) in denim blue and wore that underneath.
At my workplace, if noone comments, you take that as a good sign – and noone commented!

  2. Cute outfit! A vest over a dress, good idea!
I love that that vest is slimming. So many warm vests tend to make me look like a marshmallow. 🙂
By the way Olivia, you might be happy to know that I bought (well, received in exchange for helping a woman at our church inventory the clothing for her ebay shop) a little black dress AND a just below knee-length denim skirt! I was so excited, especially when I remembered that they were on your "how to build a modest wardrobe" post!
Thanks for all the practical advice and encouragement you've shared through this blog! Blessings!

  3. This is too cute! And what a creative idea to wear a vest over it! Might steal that someday. 🙂 Ah, love relaxed grandparents visits. Gives you a chance to breathe. The lipsheer looks awesome!

  4. Hello Olivia!

Cute outfit! I usually go with a casual cardigan if I dress down any of my fancier dresses (though a lot of my dresses are a bit more casual any way).

I've been getting a couple pairs of leggings and fleece tights for winter and am excited to pair those with my dresses as well!

  5. I wear skirts & dress them down with "outdoors" vests, the kind with all the pockets & zippers. Today, I'm wearing a floral skirt, V-neck long-sleeve t-shirt, and vest (Columbia), all from the thrift shop, with my Packer boots.

    1. No, I do not believe it is wrong. I have just been wondering why other Christians believe it is okay. Do you have a Bible verse that says its okay to wear makeup?

  6. Hi Olivia! We love your modest style (and that fleece vest)!
